Expedition 30 - OFFWORLD MODELS ::: The Art Of Mark Nohrnberg

Expedition 30

Expedition 30 was a search mission to check radiation levels in one of the many hot zones on planet A-D 83E. Heavy landing tanks were used because of their strong shielding and high speed. They also provide defense against the many criminal groups that use the hot zones as cover.

The heavy landing tanks are a type of space dropped landing ship. They are the front line in a landing operation protecting the cargo and troop ships.

This is my first try at a fiberglass model. I started with a poly styrene foam block carved to shape. I covered it in glass cloth like a surfboard. At the time I didn't know the cloth came in different weights so I used heavy stuff and it didn't conform to the surface at all. I used pushpins to hold the cloth in place it worked great.

The thick weave made the surface rough and it took lots of sanding and filling, it sucked.

Most of the details are made of plastic. Some parts are cast resin and acrylic.

The landing gear is a combo of steal wire, epoxy putty, and acrylic. The first set of gear was destroyed on the way to a model show. The second set looked too small for a machine that would weigh 150 tons or more. I made the final version to look like a WW1 tank, each unit has the track of an M113.

The main turrets are made of balsa foam and I vacum formed styrene over it for the armor plates. The 4 secondary turrets are dished domes with cast resin guns.

The doors on the side are for the infantry to fast-rope to the ground without the need to land.

At 1/35 scale the model is about 2 feet long. The base is made of plywood with carved foam details. The revetment wall is made of cast plaster and window screen hit with a hammer and painted.

The guys are made from LAPD and SAS figure parts and a little sculpting to put them in full chemical gear.
